Your Hospital Bill

There are two types of bills. Only one is from the hospital.

As a patient at Staten Island University Hospital, you or your health insurance plan will receive two types of bills: hospital bills and physician bills. The hospital bill includes your Daily Room and Board Charge, which covers the cost of your room, meals, nursing, day-to-day operating costs and, where applicable, a private room surcharge.

Depending on your insurance plan, you may have out of pocket expenses (deductible and/or co-insurance/co-payment) for your hospital visit and the physician(s) who treated you during that visit.

Physician fees are not included in your hospital bill

You will receive separate bills from your treating physician and/or specialist. These specialists can be anesthetists, surgeons, pathologists and radiologists.

The quickest way to get an answer is to call the phone number on that particular bill. Our Hospital Customer Service Staff in Patient Financial Services is available to assist you with your billing/payment related questions and concerns. Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a deductible?

A deductible is a set dollar amount such as $250 or $500 which you must pay before your insurance plan will begin reimbursement for your hospital charges. A deductible can be set for either an individual or an entire family.

2. What is a co-pay?

A co-payment is a type of cost sharing whereby the insured person typically pays a specified flat amount per unit of service or unit of time (e.g. $25 per visit, $50 per inpatient hospital stay, or $75 per emergency room visit) with the insurance plan paying the balance.

3. What is co-insurance?

Co-insurance is the portion of your healthcare expense not covered by insurance. A co-insurance is usually a percentage, such as 10% or 20%. For example, on a $500 bill, your deductible might be $150, so you would have to pay the first $150. This leaves a balance of $350. Of the $350, your co-insurance might be 20%, which means you will have to pay an additional $70. Your insurance will pay the remaining $280.

4. When will I get my bill?

Staten Island University Hospital bills your health insurance plan(s) or any responsible third party before sending you a final bill. Once payments have been received from these parties, the balance due on this statement is your portion of the bill and your responsibility to pay at this time.

5. Why did I receive a bill if I have insurance coverage?

You receive a bill after your insurance processes our bill. The amount you were billed is based on what your insurance communicates to us on an Explanation of Benefits (EOB). Your insurance also mails you an EOB, and this document details how your insurance calculated your responsibility. Contact your insurance directly (the number is likely to be on your insurance card or EOB) if you feel your responsibility is inaccurate.

6. How do I make a payment?

Payments may be made by check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express). Please return the top portion of your bill with your payment. For your convenience, payments may also be made online at www.NSLIJ.com/RESOLVE.

7. If I cannot pay my bill in full, what do I do?

Staten Island University Hospital offers many payment options, including monthly payment installments. Do not ignore the bill or send in less than the full payment without contacting us. Making less than a full payment without making prior arrangements with Patient Financial Services can cause your bill to progress through our collections process. This may include transferring your account to a collection agency which can show up on your credit report.

8. What if I do not have any insurance and/or cannot afford to pay my hospital bill?

Staten Island University Hospital provides reduced fees for uninsured or underinsured patients earning up to 500% of the federal poverty level who live within the hospital service area. For information regarding our Financial Assistance Program, please call (877) 346-2778.
