Geriatrics


The goal of the Division of Geriatric Medicine is to provide  COMPREHENSIVE and coordinated medical and social services to older adults and their families,  COORDINATED by physicians who are board-certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine, and a certified social worker.

Medicare, Medicaid and most major insurances are accepted.

Staten Island University Hospital provides expertise in the assessment, care and ongoing management of conditions affecting the elderly and their families/caregiver, including but not limited to:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic problems
  • Comprehensive evaluations for Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders
  • Health screenings for common problems found in the elderly,such as diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, osteoporosis, arthritis, memory loss, depression and confusion
  • Evaluation of geriatric patient’s medications and their interactions
  • Coordination of referrals for specialty services is provided

Donna Seminara, MD, is Director of Geriatrics at Staten Island University Hospital. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and has added qualifications in Geriatric Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr.Seminara is additionally a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Staten Island University Hospital participates in training Geriatric Fellows. These are physicians who have already completed clinical training in adult medicine and are committed to treating elderly patients. During the one-year fellowship, the Geriatric Fellows are trained to manage the special medical and psychosocial needs of geriatric patients.
