What is a hospitalist?

A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the care of a patient while admitted to a hospital for a medical condition or surgery. Since hospitalists do not work outside the hospital, they can focus all their attention on their inpatients.

During your stay at Staten Island University Hospital, the hospitalist will contact your primary or specialty care physician as needed to ensure that you receive the best and most coordinated care possible. At SIUH, we have a team of 30 hospitalists who work at our North and South campuses.

Upon leaving SIUH, the hospitalist office staff will forward a copy of your discharge summary and test results or reports to your  primary care physician.
