Preparing for Your Baby

The birth of a family.

At Staten Island University Hospital, our first concern is the delivery of premier care to our patients. With over 3,000 deliveries each year, an expert staff of obstetricians, midwives, pediatricians, neonatologists and nurses are dedicated to providing quality care for mothers and infants. As a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, SIUH provides a safe and welcoming environment for new babies and their families.

We are proud that our Cesarean rate is one of the lowest in New York state. (Maternity Information brochure available on request). SIUH also provides care to mothers who wish to deliver vaginally after having a Cesarean delivery (VBAC). Anesthesia and neonatology services are available on site 24/7 and attend all high risk deliveries.

We offer our maternity patients instructional classes, aimed toward making the birth of your child a rich and rewarding experience. At SIUH, we want you to feel confident that you're in the best possible hands for the most important time of your life.

Antepartum Care (Prenatal Testing)

Antepartum testing services are provided in the hospital and at the Center for Women's Health. Our team of highly specialized physicians manage complicated and high-risk pregnancies. The term "high-risk" is not a cause for alarm - it merely means that you and your baby will need to be monitored in special ways to give you a healthy baby. Women with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, as well as women who are expecting more than one baby are among those who need specialized care during pregnancy.

At the Center for Women's Health, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist works with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to provide the most comprehensive care available. This physician has advanced knowledge in the obstetrical, medical and surgical complications of pregnancy and their effects on both you and your baby. Our staff is trained in the latest diagnostic and treatment methods, including ultrasound.

Our state-of-the-art technology provides the most accurate information possible to our professionals and your obstetrician. You may be asked to undergo certain tests to provide your obstetrician with additional data. Your partner is welcome to stay with you during all procedures. After the tests are completed, all information will be conveyed to your obstetrician. If additional tests are needed, they will be scheduled for you.

Testing services include:

Comprehensive Ultrasound
Non-Stress Test (NST)
Fetal Biophysical Profile (BPP)
Fetal Doppler Velocimetry
Chorionic Villus sampling (CVS)
