Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU)

Laura Wenzel, RN, Patient Care Unit Manager

Dawn Danneker, RN, Assistant Patient Care Unit Manager

While the birth of a newborn infant is generally a happy experience, there are times when problems arise and admission to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) becomes necessary.

Members of the Division of Neonatology at Staten Island University Hospital are highly trained specialists, who deliver care to infants with a wide range of problems including prematurity and its complications, respiratory disorders, heart disease and infection. Care is provided in collaboration with a dedicated staff of Neonatal Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician's Assistants  and Respiratory  Therapists.

The state-of-the-art medical care provided in the NICU includes mechanical ventilation, both conventional and high frequency, inhaled nitric oxide, multichannel studies for the diagnosis of infant breathing disorders and many more of the latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.  In addition, surgical specialists are available to operate on a wide range of congenital abnormalities in the tiniest of patients. To assist in the diagnosis and evaluation of newborn infants with complex medical problems, radiologists specializing in the care of infants are available whenever needed.

Along with the highest quality of care, all patients are treated in a manner that promotes normal development and makes the family the center of all treatment plans.
