Specialties of Our Physicians
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is staffed by physicians who are board certified specialists in their fields, and who maintain the highest standards of academic quality and integrity. We practice in three key areas:
Pulmonologists specialize in diseases of the lungs and respiratory system and commonly evaluate patients with persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, abnormal chest x-rays and chest pain. Pulmonologists commonly treat patients with emphysema, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), asthma, interstitial pneumonia, sarcoidosis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Pulmonologists are also specialists in treating environmentally related pulmonary diseases such as asbestosis, silicosis and coal workers pnuemoconiosis.
Critical Care Medicine
Critical Care Physicians monitor and treat patients with respiratory failure, shock, and overwhelming infections (sepsis) in an intensive care unit. Critical Care Physicians specialize in using mechanical ventilators and hemodynamic monitoring equipment such as swan-ganz catheters, central venous pressure monitors and end-tidal carbon dioxide monitors.
Sleep Medicine Physicians evaluate patients for all disturbances of sleep and daytime sleepiness disorders may include obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, insomnia, REM behavior disorders and parasomnias (sleep walking).
