Center for The Prevention & Treatment of Chemical Dependency

If you or someone you know has a problem with alcohol or drugs, the Center for The Prevention & Treatment of Chemical Dependency at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) is ready to help.

Widely respected as one of the largest & most comprehensive treatment centers in New York, SIUH offers a wide range of treatment options for the chemically dependent patient & their family members. Patients are assessed by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of medical & counseling staff members & admitted into an appropriate program using the patient placement criteria of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

All of our programs provide individualized treatment. Interventions are designed to match the patient's readiness to change so as to increase the potential for a positive response to treatment. Motivational interviewing is used to assist the patient in identifying their strengths & to build hope, even after years of dependency & multiple treatment episodes.

It is important that as a patient's recovery progresses, he/she resumes a productive lifestyle. SIUH provides a variety of on-site educational & vocational services & referrals to assist patients in continuing their education, beginning a job-training program, or returning to the work force. And, because child-care issues represent a significant barrier that prevents many women from entering treatment, child-care is available at the South site campus for our outpatient program participants while they are attending program activities.

Each of SIUH's chemical dependency programs are licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Dr. Miguel Tirado, Medical Director of Chemical Dependency Services, is credentialed by The American Society of Addiction Medicine. The majority of the counseling staff members are Credentialed Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselors and many of the Nurses are credentialed in addiction nursing.

A comprehensive range of HIV Health Services are available including HIV testing with pre & post-test counseling, OB/GYN, acupuncture, mental health counseling for infected & affected individuals, & harm reduction/recovery readiness. Some of these services are available at off-site locations around Staten Island & in our Brooklyn programs.
