Dietary Guidelines
Remember that when you get home, you will be following a liquid diet.  Lap Band patients will follow this for 2 weeks; gastric bypass and gastric sleeve patients will follow this for 1 week.  Drinking your protein shake(s) should be your first priority, followed by water, skim or 1% milk, chicken broth, decaf tea, and sugar-free, non-carbonated beverages (i.e. Crystal Light, Wyler’s Light).  Sip on these things over the course of the day, with a goal of 4 ounces of fluid per hour.  Remember to sip slowly, do not gulp, and do not sip with a straw.

**For all procedures, you can take crushed medications with unsweetened apple sauce, sugar-free pudding, or low-fat/low-sugar vanilla yogurt (i.e. Dannon Light & Fit).  Do not mix medications in milk or in a protein shake.

Vitamins and Minerals
Lap Band Patients: your vitamins must be chewable for 1 month following surgery.  When you arrive home, begin a chewable multivitamin (adult or children’s; with iron if you’re still menstruating) twice daily and chewable 600 mg calcium + vitamin D twice daily.  Make sure you separate your calcium from your multivitamin with iron by two or more hours.
Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve Patients: your vitamins must be chewable for 3 months following surgery.  When you arrive home, begin a chewable multivitamin (adult or children’s) twice daily.  Regardless of your gender or age, it must have at least 18 mg of iron in it.  Also begin chewable 600 mg calcium + vitamin D twice daily; make sure to separate the calcium from your multivitamin with iron by two or more hours.  Lastly, you should also begin taking under the tongue (sublingual) vitamin B12.  Take one that has at 350-500 mcg of vitamin B12 and take it once daily.
