Bariatric Surgery - Long Term Post Surgical Diet

For those of you who underwent surgery more than 6 months ago there are a few general guidelines to remember. They include:

  • Eat slowly and chew thoroughly. Chew 20-25 times before swallowing.
  • Focus on protein at each meal. This includes low-fat dairy, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, nuts/nut butter, and soy/tofu.
  • Eat 3 small meals each day. Do not skip meals- this will lead to overeating at your next meal or nibbling during the day.
  • Stay hydrated. Sip on water or sugar-free, non-carbonated drinks in between your meals.
  • Make sure foods such as chicken or meat are very moist and soft and that you chew them well.
  • Be careful with fibrous vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli and string beans. These foods are difficult to break down and may upset your stomach.
  • Toast all breads for the first year and a half. Crackers and wraps do not need to be toasted.
  • Get moving! Try your best to establish a regular exercise routine such as walking, cycling, or exercise videos at home. Go at your own pace and build up your activity level as tolerated.
  • Follow up in the office regularly- this will help us work together to see if you need an adjustment (for Lap-Band patients). 
  • For all patients, regular follow ups will help you to maintain lifestyle changes and continue with successful, healthy weight loss.
  • Vitamins and minerals are lifelong recommendations.
