Scott W. Bloom, MD, FRCSC, FACS Director of General Surgery

General Surgery Residency Program Director

Dr. Scott W. Bloom joined the Department of Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital in 2010. He is currently the Director of General Surgery as well as the General Surgery Residency Program Director. Clinically, Dr. Bloom specializes in advanced minimally invasive surgery and colorectal surgery. He leads a team of experts that are dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to patients with benign and malignant disorders of the colon and rectum.

Dr. Bloom completed his surgical training at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada and started practice in the greater Vancouver area of British Columbia in August of 1999. He co-founded that institution's Minimally Invasive Surgery service, fundraising for the necessary equipment. He performed that institution's first laparoscopic colon resection for benign disease in 2000 and for malignant disease in 2002.

During Dr. Bloom's almost 11 years in practice in the Vancouver area, he served as Chief of Surgery, Site Director for Medical Education, Vice Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee, President of the British Columbia Surgical Society, and Associate Program Director for the University of British Columbia's General Surgery Residency Program (Canada's second largest training program).

Dr. Bloom is an award-winning educator of medical students and residents. His efforts as an educator and surgeon have been recognized as he was named the Educator and Attending of the Year for 2010 as well as Attending of the Year for 2011. Dr. Bloom also received the Service Excellence Award in 2012.
