Dr. Joseph T. McGinn, Jr. is one of the visionary founders of The Heart Institute of New York, and played an integral part in its planning and construction. From inception, Dr. McGinn has been a strong advocate for making THI a top-ranking program and worldwide destination for advanced cardiac care. Individually, McGinn stands at the forefront of minimally invasive heart surgery, and has performed more than 5,000 cardiac surgeries. He is an educator of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, students and patients, and teaches procedures he pioneered and developed to surgeons around the world. Dr. McGinn is Medical Director of The Heart Institute and Chairman of Surgery at StatenIsland University Hospital.
Dr. Joseph T. McGinn, Jr. received his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center, Brooklyn, NY. He then completed a general surgery residency at SUNY Downstate, Brooklyn, followed by a Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center inNew Hyde Park, NY. Dr. McGinn is triple board certified in General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, and is a leader in his field. He teaches a minimally invasive coronary artery bypass procedure that he developed and which is known as ‘The McGinn Technique’, to surgeons around the world.
