Hurricane Evacuation Statement - 8/25/11

Thursday, August 25 2011

With the danger of the encroaching hurricane, the mayor is collaborating with city health department and state officials on a decision to evacuate hospitals located in Zone A. A final determination is to be announced tomorrow morning

Such a decision would involve Staten Island University Hospital's (SIUH) two facilities located at 475 Seaview Avenue, Ocean Breeze, and 375 Seguine Avenue, Princes Bay.

In an effort to protect patients and save lives, SIUH is in the process of beginning an orderly step by step process that would discharge patients who can go home. Should the order to evacuate be forthcoming, the hospital in accordance with its emergency preparedness planning would begin the transfer and transport of patients with appropriate clinical staff to other area hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, as well as to hospitals within its own North Shore -- LIJ Health System and elsewhere.

Hospital staff will be working on preparations throughout the night to be ready if the evacuation order is called.

The emergency department is currently on diversion and would close as would all outpatient centers. Only surgeries and procedures deemed necessary to save lives in advance of transfer would be performed in the interim.
