Hurricane Evacuation Statement - 8/26/11

Friday, August 26, 2011

10 a.m.

With increased danger from the approach of Hurricane Irene, the decision to evacuate hospitals located in Hurricane Evacuation Zone A has been ordered by city and state officials.

This decision affects Staten Island University Hospital's two primary facilities: the North campus located at 475 Seaview Avenue, Ocean Breeze; and the South campus at 375 Seguine Avenue, Princes Bay. The Hospital's off-site ambulatory care centers are closed, while the emergency departments are diverting patients to other facilities.

In an effort to protect patients and save lives, SIUH has begun an orderly, step-by-step process to fully evacuate the two hospitals by late this evening.  SIUH is working closely with the North Shore - LIJ Health System, with which it is affiliated, as well as with the Office of Emergency Management.

It is estimated that a total of 230 patients at the North campus, and 130 at the South, will be evacuated.

Babies receiving care in the Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit were transferred overnight to Cohen Children's Hospital at the North Shore - LIJ Health System, Manhasset.

According to Hospital officials, medical/surgical patients - those able to sit in wheelchairs - represent the largest group and will be the first to be transported today.

Special attention and care is being given to critical care patients in advance of their transfer to ICUs, CCUs and other critical care units at health system hospitals.

Caravans of ambulances, ambulettes and buses will greet transferring patients and staff at curbside. Some SIUH RNs and ancillary staff will stay at the receiving hospitals, as needed, while others will return to Staten Island ahead of the storm.

It is expected that the majority of patients transfer from Staten Island to North Shore - LIJ Health System hospitals in locations on Long Island and Manhattan.
