Staten Island University Hospital Earns Five Stars in New Study

Staten Island, NY  (July 13, 2011) -- Staten Island University Hospital has been designated a Five-Star Provider, one of  20 hospitals to top the list of the nation's 100 best hospitals in terms of value provided to their community.

Results of Cleverley and Associates eighth annual value study were released in June. The study benchmarks hospital performance in four areas: financial viability and plant reinvestment, hospital cost structure, hospital charge structure and hospital quality.

Cleverley publishes a Value Index indicating which hospitals provide the best value to their community. The index examines a hospital's financial viability, appropriate reinvestment back into the community, looks to see if it maintains a low cost structure, has reasonable charges, and provides high quality care to its patients.

"Studies of this kind are increasingly important," according to Anthony C. Ferreri, Staten Island University Hospital's CEO.

As the cost and quality of healthcare are discussed at the highest levels of government and in corporate circles, industry leaders believe that healthcare pricing and performance are driving the dialogue that will dictate the shape of tomorrow's healthcare.

"We are approaching the day when hospitals will be reimbursed for their efficiency and quality of care. Today, we are looking for objective information - ways to quantify value in healthcare," Ferreri said.

"For SIUH, our Five Star placement in the Community Value Index suggests that our costs and charges are lower, and that we use our financial resources efficiently for reinvestment back into patient care Ferreri said.

"Our placement in the index underscores our founding mission of providing our community with the highest quality of care - something we have been doing for 150 years, since 1861. Awards like this just don't happen, they are a meaningful refection of all who provide patient care and support at our hospital," said SIUH's CEO.
