Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) has been recognized as a top-performing hospital for the sixth year in a row by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Premier healthcare alliance as part of the Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration Project.

The nationwide pay-for-performance project, now in its final year, aims to determine if economic incentives to hospitals can improve the quality of patient care. The 216 hospitals participating around the country raised their overall quality by an average of 18.6 percent over the six years based on the delivery of more than 30 evidence-based clinical care measures to patients.

These improvements saved the lives of an estimated 8,500 heart attack patients, according to a Premier analysis. The more than 2.7 million patients treated at the participating hospitals also received around 962,000 additional recommended evidence-based clinical quality measures, such as smoking cessation, discharge instructions and pneumococcal vaccination.

SIUH received 39 awards, one of two hospitals to attain the top achievement, and through the six-year time frame earned $1,155,885 in incentives. North-Shore LIJ Health System, of which SIUH is a part, received more than $3.6 million over the six years.
