STATEN ISLAND -- They have done amazing things.

Helping Staten Islanders fight cancer.

Rescuing toddlers from near drowning.

Fighting youth substance abuse.

Promoting breast cancer screening and youth reading and exercise.

They are considered the unsung heroes of community health.

Thursday afternoon, the individuals behind these selfless deeds were recognized for their accomplishments during the second annual Staten Island Community Health Hero Awards Ceremony at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bloomfield.

The ceremony is part of the Health and Wellness Expo. The awards were presented by City Councilman James Oddo, Staten Island University Hospital and Primary Care Ambulance.

"Living a healthy lifestyle is an individual act and each of us has to make that decision, but it is also a team sport and also a community event in that we can lift each other up," said Oddo, "And today we have an opportunity to thank and honor some of our fellow Islanders who made a difference."

The honorees were humbled by the recognition.

"We have amazing people here. People who care and who make a significant impact in the borough," said honoree Ronnie DiGiacomo.

"It's kind of a double privilege when you can do the work you love to do and then be honored for it," said Alberta Brescia.

Anthony Ferreri, Staten Island University Hospital's President and CEO, helped present the awards, including an Honorary Hero Award posthumously to SIUH EMT David Restuccio, who died on Aug. 27.

"David's loss was a huge blow to the Staten Island University Hospital family and to the community," Ferreri said.

The other recipients were: Dr. John Maese; Oleg Rabinovich; Assemblyman Michael Cusick; Linda Steinman; Diane Arneth; Betsy Dubovsky; Robert Blake; Kerry P. Gillespie; Dr. James Kenny; Dr. Louis Gianvito, and Dr. Carolyn Raia. Also receiving an Honorary Award was Yusek (John) Yonehara.
