Pour to Restore
Staten Island Homebrew Champ's and Da Noi Restaurateur team up for Disaster Relief Fundraiser for Local Caregivers.
2012 Staten Island Yankee Brewfest champs, Sean Torres and Philip Gardner and their associates at Pour Standards (Richmond County Homebrew Society) have organized a homebrew event, Pour to Restore, to benefit over 270 employees affected by Superstorm Sandy at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH).
In the days before and after the storm, employees at the hospital worked round-the-clock, shoring up its facilities to withstand the storm to be able provide care in its aftermath.
Many of these employees - who cared for patients during those days - had their lives turned upside down as a 16-foot storm surge, 90-mile per hour winds, and uprooted trees, destroyed 50 employee homes, and the property and personal effects of many more.
Despite all this, employees at SIUH continued to make it to work. Some worked straight through the night with very little rest caring for Islanders in need.
Sean Torres, Pour Standards president and SIUH employee, saw this dedication first hand.
"It really was amazing to see that level of professionalism. I worked side by side with people who lost everything and they didn't miss a beat when it came to patient care - I was in awe," explained Torres.
The hospital quickly established an employee relief fund to help its affected employees.
"I want to use my passion for homebrew to help my colleagues, and with the support from Eddie Gomez and Da Noi, I think we have a unique event that benefits a great cause," said Torres.
Pour to Restore will feature 20+ homebrews, varying in style, provided by many talented homebrewers in New York City and New Jersey.
The event will be held at 120 Bay Café (Cargo Cafe) on December 23, from noon - 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at http://pourtorestore.com with all proceeds benefitting SIUH's Employee Relief Fund. For more information about Pour to Restore, contact Pour Standards at (347) 979-7687.
