STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- They are the friendly faces at the reception desk or in the gift shop, the ones who try to make a visit to Staten Island University Hospital a little easier. Or they give their time raising money for a place they care deeply about.
That in mind, two volunteers and one member of the Service Auxiliary were honored Friday at the 20th annual United Hospital Fund's Hospital Auxilian and Volunteer Achievement Awards Ceremony in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
Leondina (Dina) Caccavo has been manning the register and mentoring junior assistants in the gift shop at the Ocean Breeze campus since 2006. She makes it her business to be there, even braving the elements on public transportation when most would stay home.
Katherine (Kay) Cappetta worked for the hospital before she began volunteering at the information desk as a receptionist and visitor escort at the Prince's Bay campus in 2009.
After Hurricane Sandy, Ms. Cappetta volunteered in the hospital's Company Store, distributing supplies to employees impacted by the storm.
Susan Pederson Lamberti, a member of the hospital's Service Auxiliary, was the co-chairwoman of the 2011 Fashion Show and also helps organize other charity events.
NY1 anchor Cheryl Willis was the keynote speaker at the luncheon, which recognized 86 volunteers who do similar work in hospitals throughout the five boroughs.
