STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It’s that time again. The annual Boardwalk Bash will take place Thursday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It has taken more than the normal extra effort required to organize this great outdoor event since Hurricane Sandy swept by, but the committee has done it, so mark your calendar to come on down and/or remind your group to register to be part of the showing.

You do not know what I am talking about? You’ve never heard of the Boardwalk Bash? As a reminder to the old timers and to explain to the newcomers, here is the story.

The event is a Health and Information Fair for seniors, family and friends. When the weather cooperates (and it usually does) it is like an old-fashioned fair. There is something for everyone!

Not only do you have a chance to stroll along one of our lovely beaches, but you will probably meet old friends and make some new ones.

The sponsors are Staten Island University Hospital, in cooperation with Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, Primary Care Ambulance, Health Plus-Amerigroup, the city Department of Parks and Recreation, the city Police Department, the city Fire Department.

Many community, city and state agencies will be available to answer questions related to health and services on Staten Island. Want your blood pressure checked and get a physical by the Health and Hospital Corporation (HHC)? Come on down!

Want an HIV and Hepatitis C screening by the Community Health Action group? Maybe it is for a free mammography (if you qualify) that will bring you down to stroll with the crowd. The representatives from the mobile FDNY will be on hand, sharing valuable information regarding house/fire safety, too.

Bring the kids — there will be giveaways — as well as entertainment, music, arts and crafts, snow cones, balloons, face painting and zumba dancing.

Where is this great event taking place? It will be at Midland Beach (near the Turtle Fountain), Jefferson Avenue and Father Capodanno Boulevard.

Want to register and share some information about your group’s activities or get more information? Please contact: Assemblywoman Malliotakis’ office 718-987-0197 or Carmine Raimondi at raimondic@assembly.state.ny.us or Christie Hollie at SIUH, 718-226-1832 or christinechollie@siuh.edu.

Thank you to Adele McMahon, LCSW, coordinator of Geriatric Services at SIUH for sharing this information with me and you.

By the way, just a reminder, don’t forget the sun-tan lotion. Wear a hat! You don’t want to spoil a lovely outing by getting sun burned!
