Volunteers to ‘SHINE LIKE STARS’ at
SIUH Annual Awards Ceremony
DATE: April 26
PLACE: Excelsior Grand at 2380 Hylan Boulevard
Volunteer of the Year - North Site: in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Larry Hollister became a ray of sunshine in the SIUH Company Store. Dedicating long hours, Hollister helped hundreds of displaced and devastated SIUH employees claim donated items from the store’s shelves. His “shoppers” left with food items, bedding, clean-up supplies and articles for daily living. Sometimes, with a hard-won smile courtesy of the witty Hollister, who has been a volunteer since 2009, and lives in Great Kills.
Volunteer of the Year – South Site: volunteering 4,800 hours since 1996, Enid Traub makes the South Site Gift Shop a friendly convenience store. She helps shoppers pick up the tooth brush the patient forgot to bring, find fun holiday décor, enjoy the candy counter, buy flowers and try their luck on scratch - offs. This native Staten Islander who resides in New Dorp is a retired para-professional who worked for the NYC Board of Education.
University Hospice Volunteer of Year: accepting this award will be Paul Kosinski, one of 12 hospice volunteers who make time in their lives to visit, comfort and assist end-of-life patients.
At this ceremony, awards will go to nearly 340 men and women who volunteer their time. Gloria Kevorkian has volunteered the most hours: 11,000 during her years here.
