Dakota Fanning to Play 'Mad' Patient in 'Brain on Fire'

The adaptation of Susannah Cahalan's memoir 'Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness' will be produced by Charlize Theron.

Dakota Fanning is tapped for adaptation of Susannah Cahalan's autobiography "Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness". The Jane Volturi of "Twilight Saga" is attached to play the book's author in the movie that depicts the young woman's terrifying descent into madness.

Movie rights to Cahalan's bestselling memoir are bought by Charlize Theron's production company Denver and Delilah. The "Prometheus" actress is also expected to portray a supporting role in the upcoming true-story drama.

The book chronicles the swift path of Cahalan's illness at the age of 24. She remembers waking up in a hospital with no recollection of the events of the previous month, during which time she was told she had violent episodes and delusions.

"The exhausted doctors were ready to commit me to the psychiatric ward, in effect condemning me to a lifetime of institutions, or death," she says as quoted in her official website, "until Dr. Souhel Najjar - nicknamed Dr. House - joined my team."

"He asked me to draw one simple sketch, which became key to diagnosing me with a newly discovered autoimmune disease in which my body was attacking my brain, an illness now thought to be the cause of 'demonic possessions' throughout history."
