National Cancer Survivors Day shows the world what life after cancer diagnosis looks like
Staten Island, NY- Cancer survivors, families, friends, and the medical community will gather on June 1 at La Greci's Staaten in a "patriotic"- themed celebration to commemorate
cancer survivorship and the quality of life after a cancer diagnosis.
Staten Island University Hospital's 23rd Annual,
National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) is a worldwide Celebration of Life. It is the one day each year that we come together to honor everyone who is living with a history of cancer – including America's 14 million cancer survivors. "A 'survivor' is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life," according to the NCSD Foundation, administrator for the celebration.
NCSD provides an opportunity for cancer survivors to connect with other survivors, celebrate milestones, and recognize the healthcare providers, family, and friends who have supported them along the way. It is a day for cancer survivors to stand together and show the world what life after cancer looks like.
Cancer Survivors are our family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers who are alive because of cancer research. As a result of the positive advances in early detection, cancer treatment and research, more and more Americans are surviving and living rich, productive and healthy lives following an experience with cancer. NCSD will herald this progress in cancer survivorship, as well as point out that much is yet to be done to assure all Americans the right state of the art cancer detection and treatment.
SIUH was recently awarded a 3-year accreditation with commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. This honor goes to only 74 of 1500 cancer programs who qualify for commendation.
The celebration will be filled with patient activities, raffles, guest speakers, food and refreshments. Staten Island's Deputy Borough President, Edward Burke will be speaking along with SIUH's Executive Director,
