Obstetrics/Gynecology at SIUH Staten Island University Hospital is a modern 714-
bed voluntary, acute care, not-for-profit hospital located in a suburban community within 30 minutes drive of Manhattan. We are a clinical campus for the medical school of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn.
SIUH annually discharges more than 29,000 inpatients and records nearly 450,000 ambulatory and emergency visits. Last year in the Department of Ob/Gyn we performed over 2,700 deliveries and handled over 2,400 gynecologic patients utilizing our full complement of 19 gynecology and 21 obstetrical/post-partum beds.
Program Objectives
The program is structured by the Department to graduate knowledgeable physicians who are astute diagnosticians and technically proficient practitioners aware of a woman's needs for understanding and human compassion. Special emphasis has been placed on primary and continuity of care. Throughout the program, training is designed to prepare physicians for clinical practice in any setting. As residents assume increasing responsibility for patient care, there is ample opportunity for developing the skills needed by a primary care physician.
The Program Director
Dr. Mitchell Maiman is board certified in Obstetrics and
Gynecology
and Gynecologic Oncology, and is a fellow of the
American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons. He completed his residency training at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and his fellowship training at the State University of New York-Health Science Center at Brooklyn. He has
received
numerous grants and awards for his research concerning HIV infection and cervical neoplasia, and has authored or co-authored over 60 scientific publications, articles or book chapters.
Experienced Faculty
The program is based upon the philosophy that the combined efforts of the teaching staff, residents, and medical students provide for optimal patient care and a superior educational milieu. Members of the teaching staff are Board Certified by ABOG. They have demonstrated continued academic achievement, clinical skills and the personal qualities necessary to serve as peer models and educators.
Educational and Professional Conferences
Each week, 8 hours of general and subspecialty conferences are presented by the teaching staff.
Each month, several conferences are presented by nationally and internationally recognized experts on topics of special and timely interest.
Conferences are patient oriented and relevant to the Ob/Gyn practitioner. From their first weeks in the program, residents are encouraged to participate in the preparation and presentation of many of these conferences.
Protection of Resident Education Time
House staff time is conserved through the provision of ancillary services which are performed by staff responsible for drawing bloods,
performing
laboratory studies, transporting patients, carrying out clerical duties on patient units, recording and transcribing consultations, and operative and discharge summaries. These support services enable house staff to attend 90% of scheduled teaching exercises without compromising the quality of patient care.
Divisions of The Department of Ob/Gyn
Division of Gynecologic Oncology: The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is directed by a board certified gynecologic oncologist. Full consultative and primary patient care services are available in the areas of colposcopy, laser therapy, chemotherapy and radical oncologic surgery.
Division of Reproductive Endocrinology: The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology, directed by a physician who has completed fellowship training in this area, provides full diagnostic and therapeutic capability in the area of endocrinologic disorders affecting genital function. The division is actively involved in both outpatient and inpatient evaluation of the infertile couple and offers a complete spectrum of pelvic microsurgery.
Division of Maternal/Fetal Medicine: The Division is directed by a board certified specialist in maternal/fetal medicine and offers the full armamentarium of maternal and fetal diagnostic testing available 24 hours of every day. One of the four full-time specialists are always available for immediate consultation whenever fetal or maternal jeopardy is identified.
Application and Eligibility
All applications for The Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology must be filed through the
ERAS
system. Eligibility for the program is determined on an individual basis. Applications are reviewed by a department committee and the applicant will be notified if an interview is scheduled.
Staten Island University Hospital is a participant in the National Resident Matching Program.
Residents are provided with a competitive salary, a flexible program of health benefits, disability and term life insurance, and four weeks vacation each academic year.
