Rotations


A brief description of each rotation is presented below.

 

General Radiology / Fluoroscopy  - Dr. McPherson - 12 weeks

During this rotation, the resident becomes experienced in performing and interperting a variety of fluoroscopic procedures, including esophagrams, upper GI studies, small bowel follow-through, barium enemas, hysterosalpingograms, cystograms, t-tube cholangiograms and IVP's.

Cardiac and Thoracic Radiology  - Dr. Sarkany - 12 weeks

As a first year resident, the focus of this rotation is on becoming proficient at interpreting chest x-rays. Chest CT studies as well as PE studies are read as the resident progresses in training. CT Lung Cancer screening, as part of a research study, along with cardiac imaging is also incorporated into this rotation.

Emergency Radiology  - Dr. Koutras and Dr. Yarmish - 13 weeks

The resident is responsible for reading all plain film and CT studies (excluding Neuro studies) performed in the ER during the day. Being a Level I trauma center provides the resident with ample opportunity to handle all trauma emergencies. The Attending meets with the resident at set intervals through the course of the day to finalize reports.

Body Imaging  - Dr. Lowry - 12 weeks

This rotation focuses on CT and MR examinations of the abdomen and pelvis. In addition to routine studies, the resident will become familiar with MRCP , CT urograms and CT Colonography (as a 4th year). Most of the time is spent in the Hospital, with some days at the outpatient center.

Nuclear Medicine/PET Imaging  - Dr. Brenner - 16 weeks

This department performs all types of nuclear studies, including HIDA scans, V-Q scans, GI bleeding scans, bone scans, WBC scans, gallium scans, indium scans, cardiac studies, thyroid scans and ablation, and renal studies. Localization of sentinal nodes prior to breast surgery, and radionuclide therapy for treatment of painful bone metastases are also performed. PET scans are performed and interpreted at the outpatient center.

Neuroradiology  - Dr. Raden - 13 weeks

First year residents will focus on the interpretation of CT scans of the head to prepare for independent call. The Neuro resident reads all Head CT scans from the ER. Subsequently, residents will learn MRI / MRA / MRV of the brain, MRI of the spine and CT of the neck and temporal bones. Lumbar punctures and CT myelograms under fluoroscopic guidance are routinely performed.

Ultrasound  - Dr. Shaywitz - 14 weeks

This rotation exposes the resident to abdominal and pelvic ultrasound examinations. In addition to interpreting the studies, residents will have ample time to work with the technologists to become comfortable in scanning patients themselves.

Pediatrics  - Dr. Farruggia - 12 weeks

In addition to interpreting all pediatric studies performed in the hospital, the resident will gain experience in performing fluoroscopy studies (barium enema, small-bowel series, VCUG, cystograms) as well as ultrasound studies (spine, cerebral, hips). Rounds with the pediatric department are attended daily with presentation of interesting cases.

Musculoskeletal Imaging  - Dr. Jbara - 12 weeks

Interventional Radiology  - Dr. Scheiner - 12 weeks

This busy department performs all types of interventional procedures, including cerebral angiograms, lower extremity angiograms, mesenteric angiograms, renal angiograms, uterine artery embolizations, TIPS, nephrostomy and ureteral stent placement, venograms, chemotherapy/dialysis catheter placements and PICC lines. In addition, CT guided biopsies and drainages are a major component of this rotation. The resident participates in as many cases as possible.

Breast Imaging  - Dr. Raia - 12 weeks

The residents will spend his/her time in the Breast Imaging Center (attached to the Hospital), where he/she will learn to interpret mammograms, ultrasounds and MRI's of the breast. The resident will also learn to perform breast biopsy procedures.

Night Float  - 13 weeks

Night float runs Sunday - Thursday night from 9PM - 7 AM. Readout with the early Attending occurs from 6 - 7 AM. Overnight, there is a fellowship-trained Emergency Radiologist who is available from overseas to assist the resident if necessary. An ultrasound technologist is on-call 24/7 to perform all ultrasound studies.
