Gene Coppa, M.D., FACS
Chairman, Department of Surgery

Gene Coppa, M.D. is a graduate of New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Coppa remained at New York University where he completed his surgical residency in 1979. Following this training period, he accepted a position as surgical faculty, receiving a tenured position in 1989. Dr. Coppa has extensive experience in surgery, having practiced surgery for over 25 years.

Dr. Coppa is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of The American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, as well as a member of numerous regional, national, and international medical and surgical societies. His clinical and academic pursuits include research and publications in the areas of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic surgery, Colorectal cancer, Bariatric surgery, Trauma, Surgical Infectious Disease, and Laparoscopic surgery.

He is currently the Chairman of Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital. He has been named one of the New York metro area's Best Doctors. He was also named as one of New York's top 100 Minimally Invasive Surgeons.
