After being discharged from the hospital and completing acute rehabilitation, the recovery process continues on an outpatient basis.
Outpatient brain injury rehabilitation services at Staten Island University Hospital are designed to provide comprehensive treatment to patients of all ages recovering from brain injury in the post-acute phase. The multidisciplinary team of rehabilitation professionals performs a comprehensive evaluation of the patient and determines a course of treatment tailored to his or her individual needs and personal goals. At all times, the patient and family are viewed as integral members of the rehab team. Recognizing the profound impact that brain injuries have on a patient's personal and family relationships, the team provides many opportunities for family meetings, support groups, and individual counseling to assist with the process of accepting and adjusting to the changes and challenges that the patient will face.
The outpatient rehabilitation
team has developed a treatment model which allows for patients to progress through
various levels of therapy based on their individual abilities. The process begins
with building basic functional skills through individual treatment and progresses
to developing higher level language and cognitive skills in a group setting.
The goal is to help the patient reorient to the community and return to a meaningful
life at home, at school, or in the community.
