AMBULATORY SURGERY - ENDOSCOPY UNIT
ENDOSCOPY UNIT

Staten Island University Hospital's Ambulatory Surgery/Endoscopy Unit is in operation Monday to Friday, from 6:15 am to 9:00 pm. The patient population includes all age groups, from newborn to geriatrics.

Upon entering the unit, all patients and families are greeted by the ASU registrar and all patient information is obtained and processed. The patient is then greeted by the R.N. and patient identification is confirmed. Patients and their families are escorted to a changing room. All patients have their own locker for patient belongings. The admission assessment process is done by the R.N. Each patient may wait with his or her family before surgery.

The ASU has 18 beds and 5 state-of-the-art endoscopy suites. Dr. Vincent Sottile is the Director of Endoscopy with twelve gastroenterologists on staff. The endoscopy unit has its own X-ray room so patients do not have to travel to another unit for E.R.C .P.'s and other procedures requiring X-ray. In January of '97, the Endoscopy Unit began to perform Endoscopic Ultra-Sonography. This is the only institution on Staten Island to have this equipment. After surgery and/or procedure is done, the patient returns to the ASU. During the post procedure period the R.N. assesses the patient. Once again, the patient's family may stay with the patient until discharge. Post operative M.D. orders are fulfilled. Post-operative teaching is done by the R.N. - all instructions are reviewed and explained to the patient and family. A copy of the discharge instruction is given to each patient; this information includes diet, prescription and informational drug leaflets. Patients are discharged only with a responsible adult. All patients receive a follow up call by the R.N. the day after their visit to access patient status, to answer any questions and to address concerns. Call (718) 226-9260
