Although the diagnosis of cancer is always disturbing, gynecologic cancers are particularly traumatic
because they strike at the specialized biology of a woman. Treating the most common of these cancers -- ovarian, cervical and uterine, along with the less common types -- the gynecologic oncology program emphasizes early detection and aggressive treatment.
Treatment depends not only on factors including the type of tumor, the rate of growth, and the extent, or stage of the disease, but our physicians also consider the "entire" patient -- her age, her general health, as well as her outlook -- when developing a treatment plan. Treating the woman's individual needs is foremost.
Therapies available at the Nalitt Institute include surgery, radiation therapies (external beam and
brachytherapy), chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or a combination of these options. Before beginning any form of therapy, the risks, anticipated benefits, and potential complications are discussed in detail with the patient.
