Hospital’s Surgical Obesity Center

Mr. Anthony Ferreri, Chief Executive Officer, is pleased to announce that the Obesity Surgery Center at Staten Island University Hospital has been granted "Center of Excellence" status by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

In response to the rapid increase in number of obesity operations performed in the United States and the wide variation in outcomes, the ASBS "Center of Excellence" designation process was initiated. Its purpose is to identify outstanding obesity surgery programs throughout the country. Each applicant center and surgeon(s) must submit to a rigorous evaluation process including a comprehensive site visit. Issues such as adequacy of facilities, training of staff, experience of surgeons (and allied providers), and clinical outcomes are carefully examined. Thus far, only one hundred programs in the United States, and nine in New York State have been so designated.

According to Dr. Gene Coppa, SIUH Chairman of Surgery, "Center of Excellence designation for our bariatric program represents acknowledgement of over seven years of commitment to quality care for patients needing obesity surgery." Since the center was established in 1998 it has focused on a "team approach" to the care of the obese patient population. Multidisciplinary resources such as support groups, personal nutritional counseling, comprehensive preoperative medical assessment, careful postoperative management, and constant program self-evaluation have resulted in outstanding outcomes. It is just this type of comprehensive approach which has been recognized as essential for success in bariatric surgery by the ASBS.

According to Dr. Jeff Nicastro, Director or Bariatric Surgery at SIUH, "I am happy that our program has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by the ASBS. More important, however, is that we continue to demonstrate excellent results in patient safety and success in bariatric surgery." We feel privileged to provide this unique service on Staten Island.

Staten Island University Hospital’s Center for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity is located at 256 Mason Avenue, Building B, 2nd Floor on the campus of SIUH-North Site.
