SIUH earns coveted

national top-ranking for

Maternal & Neo-natal Care

Staten Island University Hospital has received the Premier Quality Award for Maternal and Neonatal Care at a June 21 ceremony in Orlando. Florida. Premier, a strategic healthcare alliance, promotes quality in healthcare through benchmarking and performance measurement.

The 775-bed Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), which delivers more than 3,000 babies annually, is one of three hospitals out of 400 participating healthcare organizations to earn the prestigious national award for quality of care in delivering babies, and in the care of normal and high-risk newborns. The award is the fourth national award for quality of care SIUH has earned since 2004.

Mitchell A. Maiman, M.D., chairman of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a 2006 New York Magazine “Best Doctors in New York” designee, said “the Premier Award translates into reassurance for expecting moms planning to deliver at Staten Island University Hospital and for our community.”

“Our rate of caesarean section deliveries is documented by Premier as being outstandingly low, one of the lowest in the U.S.A, -- just 22.1 percent as compared to the national rate of nearly 30 percent,” Dr. Maiman said. This is significant because it means that moms are avoiding surgery, feeling more comfortable during their first precious days with baby, and going home sooner.

New mothers delivering at Staten Island University Hospital are shown to experience fewer complications, (percentage), infections, and fewer vaginal tears during both vaginal and C-section delivery (percentage).

For women who have delivered a baby by C-section and wish to deliver vaginally with the next baby -- an often difficult to achieve accomplishment -- SIUH is delivering a 15 percent higher success rate than the rest of the nation.

"Premier noted that Staten Island University Hospital has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the United States, words that women and their families want to hear, and words we can say with documented confidence,” said Philip Roth, M.D., Ph.D, SIUH chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Neonatology. Dr. Roth directs the clinical activities of University Hospital’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Roth, also, was named one of the “Best Doctors in New York” in New York Magazine’s 2006 special edition.

“On our quest to measure ourselves against the nation’s healthcare providers, we have come up again as a winner in quality care,” said Anthony C. Ferreri, president and CEO of Staten Island University Hospital. “I couldn’t feel more gratified to receive Premier’s Quality Award, nor more proud of our clinical staff and their success as they continue to serve as advocates of quality healthcare for women,” said Ferreri.
