The Department of Obstetrics provides care in many sites on Staten Island. Staten Island University Hospital / North Site offers 24-hour emergency care for obstetrical and gynecological problems. The Labor and Delivery Unit consists of Labor, Delivery Recovery (LDR) rooms, surgical suites and a new Birthing Suite. The Mother-Baby Unit provides postpartum and newborn care. Staten Island University Hospital also has an Intensive and Intermediate Care Nursery for newborns requiring that level of care. Gynecological and Antepartum patients receive care on 4CN. All units are connected by a state-of-the-art computer system for monitoring the fetus and documentation. Staten Island University Hospital performs almost 3,000 deliveries per year and functions as a Level 3 Perinatal Center. We are able to care for women with all types of high-risk conditions. The Department also has a fully accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program..
The hospital’s Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a highly respected service that supports the successful birth of as many as 500 babies annually -- children born under high-risk conditions, those born following fertility treatments, and babies born to older mothers. Directed by Philip Roth, M.D., the Neonatal ICU is well equipped to handle even the most difficult cases and provides services to infants up to 30 days old.
The Department’s Maternal/Fetal Medicine Service, directed by James Ducey, M.D., recently earned accreditation by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine for its excellence in diagnostic ultrasound. Measuring standards in personnel, physical facility, policies and procedures and quality assurance, the national organization awarded the department accreditation for three years.
Because today, one in every five pregnancies is high risk, the Department strongly emphasizes comprehensive pre-natal care. Learning of a potential problem before birth can help doctors plan on prompt and optimal treatment after the child has been born.
Babies who are at risk of cardiac abnormalities before birth can be diagnosed by fetal echocardiography ... by uncovering conditions early on in pregnancy... and monitoring the baby’s heart throughout the pregnancy.
The Department has also established its Staten Island Center for Fertility, directed by Eric Knochenhauer, MD, reproductive endocrinologist. The fertility center takes a unique approach as it approaches infertility from the vantage points of both female and male reproductive functions. Adding to the center’s expertise is Nachum Katlowitz, M.D., the hospital’s director of male sexual dysfunction
