Dr. Potaznik grew up in Belgium and was awarded his medical degree from the Universitie
Libre in Brussels, graduating magna cum laude. He completed his residency in pediatrics
at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology
and Oncology at New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and New York Cornell
Medical Center. After completing his fellowship, he worked at Israel's Sambur Center for
Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatric
Hematology and Oncology. Dr. Potaznik has been listed five times in
New York
magazine's,
"The Best Doctors of New York" (2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005).
Staten Island University Hospital's
Children's Cancer Center
provides diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for infants, children and adolescents from birth to 20
years of age. The center is
equipped to evaluate, diagnose, and treat blood disorders
such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, hemoglobinopathies, coagulation disorders and many
other blood related diseases.
Staten Island University Hospital is a
referral center for children diagnosed with
sickle cell disease at birth, and offers outpatient treatments, which include blood
transfusions, factor infusions, and ambulatory treatments such as gamma-globulin
infusions.
The center offers outpatient and inpatient pediatric cancer care. Staten Island
University Hospital offers a comprehensive approach to the treatment of Pediatric
Cancer, by having the available expertise of specialists in Pediatric Surgery,
Pathology and Radiation Therapy working with the Pediatric Cancer specialist.
Consultants in most pediatric subspecialties are available, including specialists
in Allergy/Immunology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Gynecology,
Infectious Diseases, Intensive Care Medicine, Neurology, Nephrology and Pulmonary
Diseases. Most diagnostic studies and therapies are available at SIUH, thus giving
patients and their families the most up-to-date treatment close to home.
Cancer treatments follow the guidelines of recognized National Pediatric Cancer
Study Groups, among them COG (Children Oncology Group) and NWTS (National Wilms Tumor
Study).
Having practiced Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in the metro area for over 20 years,
Dr. Potaznik has a collegial relationship with physicians at many centers throughout
the tri-state area. Patients are treated in a child-friendly environment, with the
assistance of a dedicated pediatric nurse. Support personnel in social work, nutrition
and physical therapy are available to help make a difficult time more bearable.
