Recognition in the past two decades of the unique emotional needs and potential
psychological problems of cancer patients has led to substantial progress
in understanding and treatment. Issues of adjustment to illness as it may
be complicated by such factors as medical problems, emotional problems,
culture, age (both young and old), and sex, are among those for which a
referral to the psychiatric service at the Nalitt Institute might occur.
The impact of illness on families as well as the need for home care and
other supportive services represent frequent related concerns.
The psychiatric service at the Institute provides psychiatric consultations
and referrals that may include participation in support groups, individual
and family therapy, and psychiatric counseling.
The professionals in psychiatric oncology represent a facet of the comprehensive
resources made available at the Institute to promote adaptation and overall
quality of life concerns.
