Since 85% of patients presenting with sleep disorders are diagnosed as having obstructive sleep apnea, pulmonary physicians are often the experts in the field of sleep medicine. Along with our Sleep Disorder Center, Staten Island Pulmonary Associates physicians also care for patients with sleep disorders such as; obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, narcolepsy, parasomnias (including sleep walking) and insomnia. Staten Island Pulmonary Associates physicians have also developed an expertise in the care of patients with snoring.

Dyspnea (shortness of breath) and exercise intolerance are common complaints of patients presenting to Staten Island Pulmonary Associates. When the cause of dyspnea is not obvious, Staten Island Pulmonary Associates physicians often perform a metabolic stress test in the Metabolic Exercise Laboratory. A metabolic stress test simultaneously analyzes cardiac disorders, pulmonary disorders and peripheral muscular disorders.

Staten Island Pulmonary Associates is committed to getting all patients to stop smoking. Expertise with the use of smoking cessation assistance and in concert with the stop smoking program at the Staten Island University Hospital Wellness Center, an active smoking cessation program exists.

The most common symtom bringing a patient to a physician's office is cough. Although most coughs resolve spontaneously a small number of patients remain with a chronic cough (usually defined as a cough lasting for more than one month.) Staten Island Pulmonary associate physicians are experts in the treatment of chronic cough which may be caused by many diseases including post nasal drip syndrome, occult asthma, gastresophageal reflux disease, chronic bronchitis, congestive heart failure and bronchogenic carinoma.

Staten Island Pulmonary Associates believes that the vast majority of pulmonary problems can be taken care of in the outpatient setting. One of the associated physicians is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in an effort to increase the quality of patient care by outpatient education and early intervention in the treatment of pulmonary problems.
