RESPOND
Staten Island University Hospital's Rehabilitation Medicine Center is one of the few hospital-based inpatient rehabilitation units in the metropolitan region.
Our comprehensive rehabilitation program can provide services to patients with varied rehabilitation
needs, including the medically fragile person who requires medical, surgical, and subspecialty resources.
Working with our patients, the center's physicians, nurses, therapists and other staff have distinguished themselves by achieving patient outcomes that surpass regional and national standards.
By offering a full scope of rehabilitation therapies and care to patients across the age spectrum, we can respond to each person's specialized needs and play a vital role in our surrounding community and beyond.
SKILLED REHABILITATION TEAMS
At the Rehabilitation Center of Staten Island University Hospital, patients receive at leats 3 hours of therapy a day as inpatients
during the acute phase of their illness and later may progress to outpatient or home care, depending on disability
and level of functioning. Each patient's rehabilitation is tailored to individual needs.
The rehabilitation team customizes therapies for every patient. The therapeutic team is a group of accomplished experts who incorporate the patient's goals and desires into the treatment program.
The multi-disciplinary team includes the attending physiatrist - a physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine; occupational therapist; physical therapist; speech and language pathologist; nutritionist; psychologist; rehabilitation nurse; social worker; and therapeutic recreation specialist, and rehabilitation case manager.
As part of a teaching hospital that is a major affiliate of SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, medical residents and therapists are supported by state-of-the-art technology in an accessible facility dedicated to the rehabilitation process.
Patients at the Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Center will receive services from several disciplines.
A Physiatrist evaluates each patient, orders appropriate rehabilitation therapies, follows progress, and manages associated medical problems.
An Occupational Therapist utilizes goal-directed activities and exercise to help patients restore self reliance, build a balanced lifestyle, and maintain independence for daily living.
A Physical Therapist works to improve mobility through methods based on principles of pain reduction, improved range of motion, increased strength, balance and coordination.
Speech and Language Pathologists enhance the ability to understand and communicate, treating areas of speech, voice fluency, swallowing, abstract thinking, reasoning, and memory.
A Psychologist counsels on resolving the emotional and behavioral factors that accompany illness or injury, providing support and understanding.
The Rehabilitation Nurse is an integral member of the team, providing continuity throughout the rehabilitation process, monitoring medication management and progress through the various therapies, while also providing one-on-one support and education for
patients and families.
Case Managers will facilitate the inpatient's stay for the patient/family. The Case Manager will perform a Psycho-sound assessment, orient the patient/family to the rehab service, provide feedback to the patient/family regarding and programs and assist with deveolping a discharge plan for the patient.
Therapeutic Recreation Specialists help prepare the patient for the return to community living, channeling physical, mental, and social energies to leisure and enrichment activities.
A NUTRITIONIST
The Nutritionist developes a nutrition care pan and provides nutrion education for the patient and maintain optimal medical and nutritional staties.
INPATIENT REHABILITATION
Inpatients at the Rehabilitation Center reside in a specialized unit which accommodates 62 persons. The unit is staffed with rehabilitation nurses who promote patient independence. Patients dress in their own clothes and are able to socialize when therapies are not in progress. The unit has a 50-inch television for movie viewing in the day room.
During the day, patients attend specific therapy sessions. In the state-of-the-art gym, patients receive occupational and physical therapy services ranging from ambulation training to homemaking skill development. Those who have difficulty with communication, reasoning, or swallowing are also seen by a speech and language pathologist daily. During one's stay at the Rehabilitation Center, case workers engage in discharge planning with patient and family, as well as provide vital links to support groups and
community services.
OUTPATIENT REHABILITATION
Patients are discharged from the unit when they are able to function better in the community and inpatient services are no longer needed.
Rehabilitation therapy may not stop here, however. Outpatient services are also offered for those who have accomplished much as inpatients and need to continue to improve their skills and abilities.
The outpatient Rehabilitation Department also offers many of the same therapies to patients who do not need daily comprehensive treatment. The department treats people who have had brain injuries, sports or orthopedic injuries, low back and neck pain while also treating patients with chronic conditions such as arthritis. Outpatient services also include a pediatric rehabilitation department, which offers an infant and early childhood development program.
PATIENT INVOLVEMENT
Patients and family members are an important part of the rehabilitation team, and participate fully in the process. Patients always remain the top priority, not only in design of our professional services, but in our consumer-focused amenities, such as fully-accessible facilities, convenient parking, and computer scheduling of outpatient treatments, coordinated to save the patient repeated
trips for required therapy.
Patient involvement assures the personal nature of our rehabilitation programs, as patients and their families are educated to understand the diagnosis, treatment, and continuing care that leads to a return to independence.
