General Dentistry Residency Program

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY

The department of dentistry's Special Care Section owes much to Associate Director, Steven Ratner, DDS

Dr. Ratner is director of the Special Care Program and has been acknowledged for his leadership in this field.

In 1985, Dr. Ratner was awarded a fellowship in the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped. The fellowship committee expressed its recognition of the clinical protocols he provided in treating the mentally and physically disabled. In 1990, SIUH presented to him the Dr. William P. Lavori Award for Professional Excellence. He was the award's first recipient, so named for the department's director emeritus. Dr. Ratner's dental education was completed at the New York University College of Dentistry. His academic interests include a teaching appointment at the Columbia University School of Dentistry.

His professional memberships coincide with his special interests and include the Academy of Geriatric Dentistry, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped and the American Analgesia Society. Dr. Ratner has been awarded fellowships in the New York Academy of General Dentistry and the American College of Dentists.

Associate Director David C. Hoffman, DDS, Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Hoffman directs program development for the department and heads up the cleft lip and palate program. He is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon credited with major cranio facial reconstructions.

Dr. Hoffman has participated in a national study to test a new prosthetic TM joint that is sized by computer to duplicate the patient's own joint. He has become a nationally recognized lecturer in TM arthroscopy and treatment. Dr. Hoffman holds a patent on a prosthetic TM joint.

Dr. Hoffman is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Cleft Lip and Palate Association and the National Council for International Health, among others. He is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and serves on the faculty of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and Downstate Medical Center.

A 1978 graduate of Staten Island University Hospital's General Dentistry program, Dr. Hoffman's residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery was completed at the University of Texas Health Science Center's Parkland Memorial, Dallas, and John Peter Smith Hospitals, Ft. Worth.

Meryl Efron, DDS,  Associate Director of Dentistry, counts among her duties the responsibilities of Director of Performance Improvement.

Dr. Efron, herself a product of SIUH's general dentistry residency program, is a 1983 graduate of the NYU College of Dentistry where she received the Pierre Fauchard Award and NYU Alumna Club Key Pin.

In addition to responsibilities as an associate director of dentistry, she is the department's director of performance improvement, assistant director of the dental residency program and director of the dental assistant training program. She is a past president of the Richmond County Dental Society. In 2007, she was honored by the society with its highest award — the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Efron has received fellowships from the Academy of General Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, and International College of Dentists.

Dr. Efron has extensive ties to the local community serving as chairperson of the University Hospice annual fundraiser and a member of the Hospice's Advisory Board. She also serves as a member of the board of directors of Project Hospitality, and the Staten Island Historical Society. She is a partner in the Dental Associates of Richmond and was honored with the department's Alfonso Fressola Humanitarian Award in 2000.
