Staten Island University Hospital, a member of the North Shore/ Long Island Jewish Health System (NSLIJ), is a modern and well-equipped medical facility with a diverse patient population and a high-quality teaching staff. University Hospital is a 705-bed, voluntary, non-profit, acute care, tertiary facility, which has earned its place among the leading hospitals in the northeast. Our many distinctions include:

  • Winner of the 2004 Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and Organizations’ (JCAHO) prestigious Codman Award for our work in the field of perioperative medicine.

  • Winner of the 2003 Healthcare Association of New York State’s (HANYS) illustrious Pinnacle Award for Quality Improvement for our innovative and multidisciplinary approach to operative mortality reduction in hip fracture repair surgery.

Some of the clinical highlights of Staten Island University Hospital are:

  • A 55,000 square-foot ambulatory care pavilion offering a myriad of general and subspecialty services to our patients.

  • A state-of-the-art ambulatory oncology center (Nalitt Institute), equipped to handle outpatient chemotherapy and blood product transfusions.

  • A modern Sleep Medicine Center staffed with board-certified sleep medicine specialists

  • A brand new, six-floor Cardiac Tower, which offers cardiac catheterization, PTCA (percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography), an electrophysiology laboratory and open heart surgery capabilities, both on and off pump.

  • The hospital also has numerous specialized inpatient services including:  congestive heart failure unit, bone marrow transplant, epilepsy observation unit, stroke unit, ventilator unit and geriatric unit to name a few.

  • A fully digitalized, web-based, radiological imaging program.

  • An Emergency Department that sees over 100,000 patient visits per year.

  • One of the largest (23 full-time physicians) and oldest (established 1998) hospitalist divisions in the United States, which cares for about 40% of SIUH’s medical admissions.

Staten Island University Hospital continues to develop its capabilities to meet and exceed the expectations of our patients, our community and our trainees.  Current projects include:

  • The expansion of our Emergency Department.

  • Upgrades in our electronic medical record systems.

  • The building of a two-story educational center, which will house a large modern library, conference rooms and study cubicles.
