RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR RESIDENTS

The Research Division of the Department of Medicine provides medical research experience to residents in a number of ways.

The members of the Research Division serve as mentors and facilitators for both faculty and resident research projects. Medical residents have submitted an average of 25 research projects per year to various national and regional educational meetings, such as the American College of Physicians and medical subspecialty meetings. The Research Division also sponsors a yearly medical research competition at Staten Island University Hospital for medical residents. All categorical residents are required to complete a research project prior to successful completion of the residency program.

Membership of the Research Division includes Dr. Kera Weiserbs, a Ph.D. in research methodology and biostatistics, who participates in protocol development with each medical resident. Residents are taught the rules and regulations pertaining to medical research and the necessary interaction with the Institutional Review Committee, which is based on campus and meets monthly. Research funding, support staff and laboratory facilities are available to the Research Division.
