Morton J. Kleiner, M.D.
Chairman, Department of Medicine

Dr. Morton J. Kleiner is a highly regarded clinician, educator and leader at Staten Island University Hospital.

Having first joined the hospital in 1979 following completion of his fellowship training at Rogosin Kidney Center of the Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Kleiner dedicated his first ten years at our institution to developing the Division of Nephrology.  He was appointed Director of the Division of Nephrology in 1988.  One year later, in 1989, Dr. Kleiner was appointed Associate Medical Director of our hospital.  His leadership role further expanded when, in 1990, he assumed medical directorship for hospital-wide performance improvement.  During this time, Dr. Kleiner continued to maintain and expand a highly regarded community-based clinical practice in nephrology.

Dr. Kleiner holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College, and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at North Shore University Hospital.  He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.  Dr. Kleiner has research interests in iron deficiency and rehabilitation medicine for end stage renal dialysis patients.  He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals.
