Miguel Tirado, M.D., is the Medical Director for Substance Abuse.

Medical residents are actively involved in the evaluation and management of patients with addictive disorders in both inpatients and outpatient settings.

Residents participate in the interviewing, diagnosis and management of a wide range of patients with overt and covert drug and alcohol use. House staff is instructed by the division's faculty in formulating individualized detoxification and treatment plans. They round with teaching staff in the inpatient detoxifications units and respond as part of the consultative team for general medical./ surgical patients with active substance abuse problems. In this manner, residents learn the necessary skills to coordinate aftercare resources and to draw upon services available in the community.

Didactic lectures and symposia are provided throughout the year to enhance necessary shills and to update residents and attending staff on the advances in current treatment modalities.
