The Department of Emergency Medicine serves as a receiving unit for all major categories of emergencies referred from the city-wide Emergency Medical Services network, and records tens of thousands of visits each year.

The Department is staffed with a full-time teaching faculty who provides supervision of medical residents 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. First and third-year medical residents are assigned to the Emergency Department for a total of four weeks over the three-year residency program. Each patient is evaluated initially by the medical resident and then reviewed with the ED teaching staff.

Residents are scheduled for five 12-hour tours of duty with two full days off each week. The Department encourages ongoing interaction among residents and faculty on various services including surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. Residents attend a daily ICU/Emergency Department luncheon conference which focuses on important topics in emergency medicine and critical care.

A student elective is available.
