SCREENINGS & PATIENT EDUCATION

What you know, and the sooner you know it, is the first line of defense in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The Nalitt Institute is committed to early detection and makes that commitment real with continuing, free screenings and seminars regarding the most common cancers, as well as disorders of the blood.

Screenings are regularly scheduled for cervical cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, head and neck cancer, skin cancer, and colorectal cancer.

Public education seminars are scheduled regularly, both at the Institute and at gatherings and community organizations upon request. In addition, the Institute maintains a library of current books and video tapes on cancer and its treatment, which are free and available to those interested in enhancing their knowledge.

Social Work Services

An important part of the total approach to cancer care is the availability of psycho-social support. Cancer affects not only the individual, but it also takes its toll on family and significant others. In dealing with cancer, the patient may be faced with difficult decisions, feelings of being overwhelmed, communication problems at home or at work, personal feelings of helplessness, fears of dependency, pain and death.

Through individual, family and group counseling, the social worker can help those involved focus on specific concerns and set priorities, as well as explore feelings.

By helping to coordinate homecare services and continuity-of-care issues, the social worker can often greatly reduce the burden on patients and their families.
