Welcome to Staten Island University Hospital...

We are pleased that you have come to visit. Visitors brighten a patient's day, and have a positive impact on the healing process.

Please remember that our patients are here to rest and recuperate, and that their well-being is our foremost concern.

Your adherence to our visiting hours and guidelines helps our mission to help our patients get well.

We also appreciate your comments and concerns, and invite you to speak with members of our healthcare team, including the attending physician, nurses, and our Office of Patient Representation (718) 226-8851 North or (718) 226-2010 South.

Due to the risks associated with the spread of childhood illnesses - such as chickenpox, measles, and rubella - it is our general policy to restrict visits by children under 12 years of age, except for visits to their mom and newborn sibling in maternity.

Please note that if you bring a younger child to visit, you may be required to show the child's immunization record. Only children who are current with their immunizations should visit the hospital.

Visitalk® is a communication system at the hospital's North Site, that allows televised visits between the lobby and patient rooms. Some patients who are at increased risk of infection may not be permitted direct contact with visitors. In such cases, a Visitalk® visit gives family and friends a way to stay in touch with a hospitalized patient, grandparent, other relative, or friend.

To arrange a Visitalk® visit during regular daytime hours, call the Volunteer Office at (718) 226-9132. During evenings and weekends, requests should be made to the volunteer at the Patients Information Desk.

Please help us to care for the people you care about by observing these 7 basic guidelines for hospital visits:
  1. As a general rule, only two guests may visit a patient's room at one time. It is helpful when a member of the family coordinates visits by family and friends.
  2. Voices do carry. Please remember to keep conversations at a low volume.
  3. Please leave the patient's room promptly if a doctor, nurse, or other staff member arrives to provide care.
  4. Remember, children under age 12 should not visit unless prior arrangement is made with the attending physician and nurse. As a general rule, younger children are only allowed to visit their mother and newborn sibling in the maternity unit. All children who visit the hospital would have proof of their immunization status.
  5. Patients may be placed on a restricted diet because of their medical condition or medication regimen. It is essential that you do not bring food to the patients from home or from the hospital cafeteria.
  6. Overnight stays by visitors are generally not permitted, except by special advance arrangement.
  7. In our pediatric unit, we general ask that overnight stays be limited to one parent. Parents may alternate nights.
